Most of the people that Grumpy's bonds out of jail are not bad people. However, most do have some type of major problem that inhibits their ability to lead normal and productive lives. If I had to guess, I would say that about 80% of the people that we bond out of jail suffer from some type of addiction or dysfunction. Grumpy and I both have a real heart for these people because we, too, have suffered from addiction.

Grumpy became addicted to pain pills after breaking his back in the service. He has an interesting and amazing story of recovery, and if you ask him, he just might share it with you.

I, on the other hand, suffered from an insidious eating disorder that was devastating my life.

Pain Behind the Smile: My Battle With Bulimia is my own story of suffering, recognition, and recovery. I wrote this book myself in 1994 in order to help me cope with my problems. Letting go of my pain, admitting my problems, and writing my story on paper were my first steps toward getting healthy again.
